Second day in Luzern

Today I decided to follow a plan described in Rick Steves’ guide book. I took a bus from Luzern to Kriens, about 5 miles, where I would get on a Gondola and travel to the top of Mount Pilatus Kulm, a height of 7000 feet. At the peak there is a restaurant and coffee shop along with hiking trails and areas to explore the peak. It was cold, approximately 45 degrees. The views were often obscured by clouds. It turned out to be a very fun day.

In the gondola, on the way up the mountain, I could not help but notice the I love Florida sticker on the door.
I got an early start in the morning and I was on the very first gondola that arrived at the top. For an almost an hour I felt like I had the place to myself.
This is one of the gondolas bringing tourists to the top
The facility at the top of Pilatus Kulm is very nice. In addition to the coffee shop and restaurant, there is a small hotel and souvenir shop.
From a nearby peak I got a kick out of the direction signs The peak had an observation deck that was sponsored by Edelweiss Airlines. Maybe the I Love Florida sticker was not a surprise after all. Tampa Bay is 10 hours flight time from Switzerland.
Cog train going down the back side of the mountain. I will be on that train later in the day.
In the afternoon I got to experience the steepest cog train in Europe with a grade of upto 40 degrees at points.
The cog train dropped me off at Alpnachstad, a small town on Lake Luzern, where I took a 75 minute ferry ride across the lake back to Luzern.

Ironic to see the Tampa Bay sign and the Florida sticker. Sights look so beautiful they don’t seem real.
