Arrived in Bruges, Belgium

I flew into Luchthaven Zaventem International Airport (better known as Brussels International Airport) from Washington Dulles on Friday morning (April 5). I took a two hour train ride from Brussels to Bruges where I walked a half mile from the train station to the Crown Plaza hotel. I arrived on an overcast cold day with a constant drizzle. Welcome to Belgium.

The walk from the Bruges train station led me through a park in a light rain.

Bruges is often called the Venice of the north. Many canals run through the city.

I am staying at the Crown Plaza hotel, located on the right. The hotel is very nice and is well located in the heart of old Bruges.

Day 2 in Bruges

This what the plaza in front of my hotel looks like early in the morning.

Canal through the old city
Early morning walk through the old town
Took a tour of the De Halve Maan Brewery
View of Bruges from top of brewery tower

The brewery dates back to the early 18th century. Because the building is small, once the beer is made it is piped almost a mile to a modern bottling facility. The underground pipe was built in 2018 at great expense.

After the tour, I enjoyed lunch at the brewery. Of course i got the beer for free.

Toured Church of Our Lady. This church contains a crypt where many of the Belgian royals are buried and the only Michelangelo to leave Italy in his lifetime.

Madonna & Child by Michelangelo
Ghost tour of “Old Bruges”
Bruges is beautiful at night. The city takes on a different feeling.

Day 3 Bruges

Early morning walk to breakfast
Belgian pancakes for breakfast
Took a thirty minute ride through the canals of Bruges
Oldest canal bridge in Bruges. Dates to the 14th century
